Neuroscience behind gratitude

As per neuroscience, gratitude is considered as a healthiest of all human emotions.

According to research studies, when our mind experiences the feeling of gratitude, our brain starts to release a combination of hormones dopamine, oxytocin and endorphins. All three are feel-good neurotransmitters responsible for feeling of happiness and pleasure.

Human mind is habitual to focus only on negative happenings in the surrounding. When a continuous stream of negative thoughts hijacks our mind, our brain initiates a heighten stress-response in the form of fear and anxiety. At this state, gratitude plays a significant role by diverting our mind from negative to positive side of the world. As we slowly replace our negative thoughts with gratitude, the world appears as a better place to live.

We cannot be fearful and grateful at the same time. Gratitude is the antidote. It reinforces the idea that there is goodness around us and in our life. Simple act of gratitude helps us to reflect on all that we have to be thankful for and change our outlook to see the world.

Therefore, to tackle our negativity the first step is the practice of gratitude.

A daily practice of gratitude makes us to experience more positive emotions, feel more alive, sleep better, express more compassion and kindness and even have a stronger immune system.

Finding moments of gratitude

No matter how tough is the situation, there is always something we should be grateful for. Taking few moments to notice and appreciating the good things that we already have in our life do wonders. 

Be grateful for our survival. We are living, and that is the most important thing. 

Let’s count our blessings such as having family, friends, comfortable home and good food. We are fortunate to have all these basic things that make life easy, safe and meaningful.

Take a moment to appreciate all those good things that are making our life comfortable at this phase. It could be simple things like people who are helping, motivating and supporting us. 

And if there are an extra-ordinary achievements in life, we must be eternally grateful to the universe. 

There are unlimited things we should say “ Thank you”. The list is endless. 

The more we appreciate the good things in life, the more optimistic we will become. Everyday start to appear as a blessing when we find greatness in smaller things. 

As emotionally healthy individual, we understand the importance of what life offers to us. We should be always grateful for those little blessings that make our life meaningful. In fact, we should in a habit of focusing on positive aspects in our life. 

A good emotional health allows us to express feelings of appreciation that creates a sense of pleasure and contentment. And that could be the reason the virtue of gratitude is associated with increased happiness and life satisfaction. 

Although we have one thing in life to regret, there are several other we should appreciate. Instead of getting consume on negative self-talk, try to value and appreciate things that we have. 

Writing gratitude list is a really helpful way for emotional wellness. It encourages us to be grateful for more and that makes it more fulfilling. Our gratitude list is a perfect reminder that there are many things in our lives we can cherish. 

In essence, gratitude is one of the most powerful emotions we can have. So powerful that there is room for only being grateful, grateful and grateful.

Let’s express gratitude in the pursuit of achieving emotional wellness and as a way forward to great life.
