Getting Conscious About Healthy Eating Habits

“Eat your food as medicine, otherwise you have to eat medicine as your food.”

This is perhaps the most popular saying in the field of health and wellness. And you don’t need to be genius to understand simple logic behind it.

It is just like cultivating good quality crops. When farmer nourish samplings with water, organic manure and proper sunlight, the crops are healthy. When the crops are healthy, the yield is good.

Similarly, if we nourish our body with balanced diet, undoubtedly we will become fit and healthy. Health and nutrition has come a long way. It is no secret that good food holds a promise of health, quality life and longevity. Given that, it restores physical well-being too by building immunity.

But how many of us are really conscious about eating habits?

Maybe all. But we are human with taste buds that crave for delicious food.

I am not saying that delicious food is not healthy. Take an example of  our traditional Indian food. Whether it is breakfast items like idli, dosa, poha or meal like dal, rice, roti and vegetable, everything is delicious. Everything is tasty. Everything is nutritious. And everything is healthy for body too.

But the problem arises when our delicacies cross limits and we become victim of fried food, junk foods, packaged food and not to mentioned western food. Subsequently, a rise in lifestyle disorders such as obesity, diabetes and heart problem is inevitable.

It is not like that we are unaware about ill-effects of unhealthy eating pattern. In fact, we are the most educated generation so far and most concerned about health and fitness. There is hardly anyone who don’t know the joy of healthy living.

But the problem is that somewhere we are taking things lightly. We know we all live once, and in that matter,  we want to enjoy everything coming on our way. And definitely this thought is making us to choose unhealthy over healthy.

The second things is that we believe on burning calories rather than controlling consumption. Hitting a gym everyday seems to be more feasible option than mindful eating.

The another thing is that we are living in busiest world. Professional life seems to be more lucrative and reaching the hierarchy has become ultimate goal. With more focus on office work, we hardly get time to cook delicious meal at home. Ordering outside eatables has become much easier than spending hours in kitchen.

Simply putting together, we are the most aware generation about healthy living but failed to take proper steps in journey towards wellness.

Knowingly or unknowingly, we are transferring this legacy to our next generation too.  For our children we are role models and it is easy for them to copy our behavior.

Given that, don’t you think it is a time to recheck our eating habits?

Yes, we live once and must enjoy different food products.

But can’t we be mindful in exploring healthy eating ways? Testing variety of food once in a while is not bad but getting addicted to it is something bothering.

The prime purpose of food is to nourish our body and not to full our stomach. No matter how yummy food we eat in a day, our body needs only essential constituents. So, it will absorb only carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins and minerals in needed amount and get rid of non-essentials. But when our intake of unhealthy food is more, getting rid  of non-essential is cumbersome for body and therefore, ill-effects in the form of illnesses are inevitable.

Yes, we are too busy to cook our food.

But how much time it really need to cook healthy food at home?

Do you really think cooking simple meal like dal-rice and vegetable-rotis take lots of time? Even if this is true, how many of hours do we spend scrolling on our mobile?

The reality of today’s world is that we have time for unnecessary activities but not for adoption of healthy behavior.

I really think that being busy is never a reason for ordering outside eatables but inability to take control over our taste buds is the culprit.

Adopting healthy dietary habits is not just about eating things that are good for body. One needs to purposefully stay away from unhealthy behavior too which needs discipline, determination and strong mindset.

Your eating pattern has a direct impact on the way you feel. Intake of caffeine, alcohol, trans fats and food with high levels of chemical preservatives adversely affect your mood.

On the contrary, food rich in Omega-3-fatty acids plays an essential role in stabilizing mood. So replace your bad food habits with healthy one to feel better.
