Cultivating A Sense Of Happiness

The pursuit of happiness is a fundamental element of human nature. It is something we all want to cultivate in life and therefore, become a cornerstone of our culture from the beginning.

This could be the reason that today’s people take ‘being happy’ directive seriously. 

And why not ? 

After all, a sense of happiness plays an important role in living a meaningful life. It is something that motivates us to look at life with positive perspective. It is something that encourages us to dream big and pursue our passion. It is something that keeps us close to our friends and family. 

And that could be the reason people today are looking at their life for far more than simply to survive. They want to enjoy. They want to feel happy.

The concept of happiness

But what does exactly happiness mean?

Psychologically, happiness is an emotional state characterised by feelings of joy, contentment, and fulfilment. It is often described in terms of positive emotions and life satisfaction.

This emotional state is often considered as “subjective well-being”.

It is an emotion to experience and showcase in actions. Everyone has different things that make them joyous. 

A child can feel happy when he/she plays with friends or goes out with their parents on weekends. Teenagers feel happy when get a compliment for their look. For youngsters, a sense of accomplishment in life brings happiness and satisfaction. For older,  having beautiful family and friends around is sufficient to feel happy. Even a simple act of kindness can make an individual happy. 

Importance of happiness

The importance of happiness is beyond any expression. Happiness is one such precious emotions that has amazing benefits on several other important aspects of life.

Happiness is one of the basic positive emotions and being positive emotion it offers several benefits for mental health. 

According to scientific studies, positive emotions boost the release of dopamine and serotonin neurotransmitter in certain parts of the brain. Both are feel good hormones and improve our mood to a great extent.

Positive emotions improve our outlook to see at the life and trigger an upward spiral of good thoughts which subsequently improves our thinking pattern in good ways. It makes us to look for all possible alternatives, explore more opportunities and enhance our ability to adopt ourselves in changing environment.

Thus, happiness makes us to feel good irrespective of cause, situation, place and person.

Happiness brings momentum. Happiness increases our motivation to do things better and take on new challenges head-on in life. Being in a good mood, we get engaged in  creative work, that enhances our productivity. 

Happiness ensures overall well-being of an individual. When we are in a positive mental state, we get to engage in better health behaviors. Happy people are more likely to adopt healthy behaviour (exercise, healthy eating, sleeping well, pursuing hobby) that is closely linked to overall wellness. And therefore, happiness is considered as a reason to live long life.

Happiness is the reason to form strong relationships. When we are happy, we emit positive vibes that attract optimistic people around us. People like being around joyful people. Happy people are usually considerate and helpful towards others, which is the backbone of good relationship.

Happy people become more satisfied not simply because they feel better, but because they develop resources for living well.

Don’t you think happiness is a worthy goal and we should strive for it ?

Yes, happiness matter because it feels good. It contributes to greater physical and mental health. It is correlated with greater satisfaction with life, and it’s linked with expanded capability to contribute toward community.

Discovering inner happiness

We all want to be happy, and there are countless ideas about how we can get some happiness. But not many of those ideas are long-lasting. 

Why?

This is because happiness is a state of mind. It may seem hard to believe, but there’s much truth behind the concept that life circumstances play a role in our level of happiness. Our choices, thoughts and actions can influence our level of happiness.

The bitter truth is that this state of emotional well-being is achieved only when good things happen to us in a specific moment.

As all of us are quite aware, good things never happen on the everyday basis. There are ups and downs. There are highs and lows in life. 

Then what can we do to sustain this state of mind?

Is there any way to cultivate happiness?

Yes, the key is discovering our inner satisfaction and joy, which can be done naturally. 

For this, the first step is finding what makes us happy. It can be anything like dancing, singing, studying, playing, writing or doing charity etc. 

Happiness is a very subjective term, and different people feel happy for different reasons.

For some people, it is the family that makes them happy and for others, social connectivity is the source of happiness.

For some people, works brings feeling of joy and for others getting relaxation brings momentum.

Some people are happy in doing social work, while others feel satisfied with self-care.

Some people enjoy performing a new task every day, but some people are happy with their routine work.

So, ultimately it’s your nature that will decide what makes you happy.

Identify your nature and look for opportunities that will make you feel happy.
